The Dirty Weather Report

Though the initial havoc Hurricane Sandy dealt to the Eastern seaboard is now a few weeks behind us, the rebuilding process is ongoing, and valuable lessons from the disaster remain strong. In particular, we must recognize that this type of volatile weather is not an isolated event – rather, it’s a completely new pattern of Dirty Weather that is the “new normal” caused all over the world by a rapidly destabilizing climate. Climate change deniers have taken this opportunity to spread disinformation, but growing recognition, participation and action from an increasingly broad audience is countering denial and spurring the fight against climate change. Thankfully, some former deniers are now joining the call for action. We respectfully ask that others consider doing the same. But again, the fulcrum of change is popular opinion. Please help us “win the conversation.” The future of human civilization is literally at stake.

It is evident through the comments, posts, and discussion on Daily Kos that this community is integral to this movement. Impassioned, committed individuals like you can harness the power of today’s new digital technology and broaden the message of climate action. That is why I would like to invite you to join The Climate Reality Project for 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report, a 24-hour, multimedia event that seeks to connect the dots between dirty weather and our warming climate and make the case for solutions to the very real climate crisis we all face.

Please, share the pledge link above and encourage others to tune in and participate during The Dirty Weather Report; groups all over the world are already joining, and we need your help!

As we have seen so recently with super storm Sandy, climate change is already happening, and we must act now as a global community to avoid its most deleterious effects. The future may look uncertain, but it is rife with opportunity. Here in the United States, we have a chance to move forward with a newly re-elected administration that has expressed support in the past and must lead us in an aggressive commitment toward policy action. In the global space, we have the opportunity to build on the momentum of legislative action in Australia, Mexico, Korea, 17 other countries, British Columbia, Quebec, California and many other state, provincial, regional and local governments around the world.

We cannot simply wait for the answer to come from politicians – we must also engage and magnify the voices of those who face and overcome climate obstacles each and every day. We must encourage the enthusiasm and commitment to climate progress I have seen in local and international communities, including Daily Kos.

It is in the hopes of capturing such community voices that we are putting on 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report. This 24-hour global webcast will bring together the world’s leading scientists, policy-makers, thought leaders, entertainers, business leaders, humanitarians, philanthropists and activists, to tell the story of climate change around the world.

I encourage you to join this global conversation – taking place in every time zone – to hear the countries, communities, and individual voices that are stepping up to combat the threat of climate change. Together, we can stop the spread of misinformation and start the conversation about climate solutions. Join us at www.climaterealityproject.org.
